Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:

* To develop an appreciation of the complexity of environmental interactions and the ways in which human activities can impinge on the ecosystem as a whole.
* To explore the nature of pollutants and their major environmental effects.
* To introduce the technologies used to control the levels of pollutants in air and water.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:
* Appreciate and show evidence of the influence of human activities, in particular those brought by chemical industries, on the earth's ecosystems and on the viability of human populations.
* Summarise and explain the ethical dimension of applying principles of sustainability to chemical engineering technologies.
* Discuss and recommend appropriate solutions to energy production and pollution control (water & air).
* Apply current tools and methodologies relevant to environmental management (e.g., LCA, energy pinch, green chemistry, waste management etc.).

Skills:
Problem solving [T,F,A]
Data analysis [T,F,A].

Content:

* Introduction to the concepts of an integrated environment - the Gaia hypothesis.
* Life cycle analysis.
* Energy conversion and the environment.
* Pinch analysis.
* Climate change.
* Ozone depletion.
* The nature, effects and control of water and air pollution.
