This unit will allow students to examine the nature of coaching and its position in practice recognising how advanced theoretical perspectives can provide praxis for enhancing their development as practitioners. Students will be challenged to develop a set of values about behaviour and practice recognising how these may change over time depending on experience and context.

Learning Outcomes:

* Recognise how different theoretical positions influence approaches to coaching practice addressing potential learning/developmental implications;
* Become aware of the social context within which coaching is enshrined and how this can facilitate both inquiry and reflection;
* To demonstrate a critical understanding of the complexities of sports coaching through both academic and professional practice within a framework of critical evaluation and synthesis.

Skills:
Critically evaluate their own coaching ideas, values and experiences utilising sports coaching, pedagogy and physical activity literature including paradigms, theories, concepts and principles from a range of sources. A process will then be undertaken whereby students communicate a piece of intellectual work based on the critical matter incorporated in the unit designed to develop their coaching knowledge.

Content:
Initially the learning environment will be a central theme examining pedagogical approaches to practice and how applied theories of practice can be developed in the field. The notion of 'expertise' will be investigated locating different theoretical positions and how these dovetail into a philosophy concerning the ongoing development of the self as a coach guided by predominant knowledge. The coach as a 'social actor' will lend an appreciation to the holistic nature and further examination of the 'role' allowing for a heightened appreciation of critical incidents in the field.
