Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
The Unit aims to:
* Enable students to build on their knowledge of Motivational Interviewing and increase their skills.
* Offer opportunities for assessed skills practice and introduce students to a method for rating their Motivational Interviewing skills.
* Require students to put their skills to use in the workplace and to reflect on the utility of the approach in various settings and situations.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit the student should be able to:
* Identify and evaluate motivational interviewing skills in context.
* Use a current validated rating method to assess MI skills.
* Accurately assess when a motivational interviewing approach is indicated.
* Demonstrate ability to use MI skills appropriately and to evaluate their effect.
* Demonstrate ability to monitor client motivation and transition appropriately from a motivational focus to an action focus when the client is ready.

Content:
This unit concentrates on:
* An exploration of the 'spirit' of MI: attitudes and the nature of the helping relationship.
* How the spirit of MI is actualised using skilful listening and responding and the use of 'techniques'.
* A detailed examination of global characteristics of good MI, and a closer look at specific therapist behaviours.
* An introduction to observing and rating therapist characteristics and behaviours.
* Observed skills practice, self-rated and rated by fellow students.
* Recognising client responses and monitoring motivation in the session.
* Transitional work: moving from ambivalence to action.
* Preserving the spirit of MI while facilitating 12 Step involvement or CBT work: motivation versus indoctrination. Role-play of typical scenarios.
