Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To promote understanding of the fundamental principles of mechanics.
To introduce engineering bending theory.
To apply principles of dynamical modelling to different rotating and reciprocating machines.
To introduce concepts of stress and strain transformation.
To develop methods to analyse linkage mechanisms.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
* Calculate shear forces, bending moments and deflections in beams. Determine the stress and strain states of simple structural forms; Manipulate stress and strain transformation equations, and understand Mohr's circle.
* Model basic mechanical machines.
* Analyse the state of balance of a system comprising rotating masses, and determine effects of unbalance.
* Calculate velocities in a linkage mechanism.

Skills:
Numeracy; problem solving; working independently.

Content:
Simple bending theory. Torque transmission/shear stress: clutches; belt drives. Balancing of rotating masses: flywheels; rotating and reciprocating machines. Slope and deflection of beams. Stress transformations and Mohr's circle. Pressure vessels. Vector methods and theory of gyroscopes. Analysis of linkage mechanisms. Solid Mechanics laboratory experiment.
