Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To provide:
* An insight into the interface between design, manufacturing and cost.
* An introduction to the industrial practices for cost estimating through the design of a product/product service systems.
* An understanding of the approaches to estimating the cost of manufacturing a product/product-service as well as owning and disposal of a product-service.
* An introduction to the techniques that can be used to estimate the cost of a product/product-service.
* If you are designing a new product/process/service/system to understand how to identify the cost estimating relationships of specific attributes or specification requirements which influence the cost.
* An introduction to some commercial packages and what they offer.
* An understanding of uncertainty; especially for novel products and long-life products.
* An understanding of how to undertake a through life cost analysis for products to aid in design selection.
* An understanding of the challenges industry faces in estimating their costs of delivering and servicing a product.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
* Identify the inter-relationships between design, manufacture, cost and sustainment.
* Identify the key cost drivers and evaluate designs in terms of Design to Cost.
* Define appropriate techniques that can be used to create a cost estimate for the exemplar product.
* Enumerate various commercial cost estimating packages and understand their pros/cons.
* Characterise some of the different challenges that particular industrial sectors face in terms of cost estimating.
* Create a cost estimate for a product.
* Analyse the cost of the product/product-service-system through its life cycle.

Skills:
Problem solving; analytical analysis; working independently.

Content:
Analysis of designs from the viewpoint of cost and manufacture.
Industrial speakers introducing exemplar products and the interactions between design, manufacture and cost.
Cost estimating - techniques such as quantitative and qualitative, analogy, Cost estimate relationships, uncertainty, spreadsheets, stochastic and use of commercial packages. Illustrate how the techniques can be used for costing a product and how this links to design and manufacture. These will be integrated throughout the course.
Identifying cost estimate relationships. Creating a cost model. Introduction to commercial cost estimating packages and using excel.
Uncertainty - types of uncertainty, estimating the impact of the uncertainty on the cost estimate.
Data analysis - data readiness levels, quality of data.
The course will be taught through engineering exemplars and engaging with industry.
