To understand, examine and evaluate the process of European integration, the development of the European Union and the key ideas that have shaped these developments.

Learning Outcomes:
Students who complete the unit successfully will understand the key political and philosophical concepts that have directed and formed the development of the European Union as it exists today and gain a knowledge of the challenges that face European integration in the 21st century, as well as the historical conditions of the integration process. The unit will pay particular attention to the question of defining European identity and the function of that identity in the integration process. Students will also understand the multiple ways in which issues of European identity and memory are mediated through cultural production, particularly in European literature and cinema.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, teamworkand the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning are developed in this unit.

Content:
Topics will include: ideas of Europe integration before the Second World War; European integration in the post-war period; collective memory and European identity; definitions of European identity; regional identities; multicultural Europe; migration; Eastern and Central Europe; European identity in literature and cinema; Euroscepticism; European citizenship.
