Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To develop an analytical and conceptual understanding of building environmental engineering applied to Low and Zero Carbon buildings. To develop building energy modelling and simulation skills and to introduce students to research methods in building physics and their influence on the design of Low and Zero Carbon buildings.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the unit, the student should be able to demonstrate understanding, and an ability to apply that understanding, in areas summarised in the 'Contents' section.

* Advanced analytical techniques related to use of energy in buildings.

* To distinguish between competing solutions through quantitative assessment of their respective performance.
* To communicate ideas in a coherent and convincing technical manner both verbally and in writing.

Content:
Analysis of building energy use. The design and performance evaluation of active and passive heating, ventilation and cooling systems. Analysis of the impact and performance of renewable energy technologies. Application of computational tools in building environmental design. Analysis of thermal mass using the kappa-value. Calculation and evaluation of the impact of thermal bridging. Hygrothermal analysis of natural building materials.
