This unit is aimed at students interested in understanding the molecular aspects of plant health and disease that can inform practical approaches to environmental and crop management.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit you will be able to:
* Apply systematic understanding to develop a critical awareness of the ability of plants to cope with; environmental stresses, particularly pathogens and pests;
* Discriminatively apply relevant practical techniques and critically interpret results;
* Communicate your critical evaluation and analyses through a formal presentation;
* Critically evaluate experimental evidence within this field;
* Develop teamwork skills through lab-based project work.

Content:
Topics include:
Plant-microbial interactions, biology and control of the major groups of fungal and bacterial plant pathogens, physiological, biochemical and molecular basis of host-parasite interactions , ecological relationships, control strategies (biological control, resistant host genotypes, fungicides), strategies for pathogenicity and host resistance mechanisms.
