This unit is aimed at students interested in analysing the strengths and limitations of proteomic technologies and the application of structural biology data in medicine.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit you will be able to:
* Demonstrate a critical and integrated overview of the key processes controlling the production and turnover of cellular proteins;
* Evaluate and analyse the strengths and limitations of proteomic technologies and application of structural biology data in medicine;
* Critically evaluate the wider applications of enzymes in biotechnology & medicine;
* Examine the impact of genome sequencing and recombinant DNA technologies on the potential application of enzymes in medicine;
* Communicate your critical evaluation and analyses through a formal presentation.

Content:
Topics include protein folding, post-translational modifications and turnover, computational approaches to proteomics, enzyme engineering; biosensors; enzyme chaperones; clinical enzymology; enzyme therapy; enzymes as target for drugs; catalytic antibodies; extremozymes.
