Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
This unit aims to provide you with an understanding of the latest developments in bioinformatics, such as collection and analysis of large genomic sequences, comparative genome bioinformatics, computational modelling and related statistical tools.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit you will be able to:
* Apply your understanding of your core bioinformatics knowledge drawing on concepts in genetics, genomics, statistics and computational modelling
* Critically evaluate and communicate the findings of a cutting-edge bioinformatics research publication through a formal presentation
* Critically evaluate, synthesise and summarise the findings of a variety of cutting-edge bioinformatics research publications through a written literature review.

Content:
The unit synthesises the fundamental principles in genetics and genomics with computational sciences. You will be provided with the fundamental concepts underpinning four core areas of bioinformatics
a) Genetics and Genomics: key concepts in genetics, genomics (generation, analysis and annotation of genome sequences)
b) Genome Bioinformatics: principles of genome (NGS) analysis, including genome assembly, variant calling, transcriptomics and proteomics.
c) Statistics: Core bio-statistical methods, within the R statistical computing environment
d) Computational modelling in biology.
