Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To:
* Understand the role of water and water management in industrial processes. Provide tools and engineering skills to minimise the water footprint of a process by an integrated design and evaluation approach.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit the student will be able to:
* Create and explain an advanced design for a dedicated water system, optimised to provide the required water quality and minimise the total overall water use
* Describe, explain and discuss complex water treatment and re-use systems and unit operations in a whole system approach in the design phase and during day to day operation
* Critically evaluate economics and environmental impact of urban and industrial water systems on the basis of Life cycle assessment and Life cycle costing, including treatment residual handling

Skills:

* Ability to conceptualise, design and integrate a water supply and re-use system in a whole systems approach (T,F,A)
* Ability to assess and critically evaluate industrial and municipal water supply based on water quality, performance, environmental impact and costs (T,F,A)
* Ability to optimise and trouble shoot a municipal and industrial water supply system (T,F,A)
* Ability to report on water quality and performance of a water supply system (T,F,A)

Content:

* Water quality parameters, introduction to water chemistry
* Water treatment unit operations (water quality, chemicals demand, energy demand)
* Water quality requirements for human consumption and water needs of different industries
* Introduction to the biology of water distribution systems and the microbiology of water treatment
* Water cascading and re-use - benefits and drawbacks
* Chemicals and energy demand, treatment residuals
* LCA and LCC for water supply systems
* System integration - optimisation and redundancy
* Legislation, regulations
* Operation, monitoring and maintenance.
