Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
The aims of the unit are to immerse the student in the design process used for mechatronic solutions to solve a design challenge. This unit is designed to develop students' expertise in integrating mechatronic prototyping hardware and the computer code needed. The unit aims to provide a broad understanding of: mechanism design; components used to build mechatronic systems (motor types, servos, actuators, feedback sensors); feedback control and signal processing.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit a student will be able to:
* Design, construct, and evaluate the performance of a mechatronic prototype using electronic device evaluation/prototype boards.
* Design robust and reliable mechanisms.
* Integrate appropriate motor types, servos, actuators, feedback sensors in the designed system.
* Apply basic signal processing techniques to refine feedback signals.
* Troubleshoot mechanical, electronic and software errors.

Problem solving (F/A); mechanism and electronic system design (T/A); independent and team working (F/A); mechatronic prototyping skills (T/F/A); presentation skills (A); written communication (A).

The unit will include taught content, introducing mechanism design and the basic electronic components pre-selected for the assignment. These might include: processor development boards, motors, actuators, servos, sensor prototyping modules. Theoretical principles of feedback control and signal processing. An introduction to the programing language to be used.
Tutoring and studio-based working will provide broad and specific content on design and problem solving for mechatronic projects.
