Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:

* To show how electromechanical systems can be designed by integrating analytical and practical skills from the engineering sciences.
* To demonstrate the importance of optimisation within an iterative design process.
* To analyse electronic interfaces to mechanical or physical systems and their role within the design of embedded systems.
* To introduce students to the key concepts required for the design, manufacture and test of electronic circuits including Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design, soldering, surface mount and packaging.
* To further develop students CAD modelling abilities.
* To introduce students to collaborative working in a design environment.

Learning Outcomes:

* Design a sub-assembly in detail using correctly selected components and design ancillary items to meet a requirement.
* Recognise the importance of completing comprehensive design. analyse, component drawings and sub-assembly drawings in order to achieve a successful solution.
* Design a PCB containing electronic interfaces to a physical system
* Create a package suitable for external manufacture of a PCB capable of analysing and performing a diagnosis of the systems designed.

Skills:

* Problem solving; numeracy; IT; working as part of a group; leadership.
* Electronic Circuit Testing and Debugging, Electronic Design Tools for PCB circuit design.
* Application of methods discussed in the lectures to solving engineering problems.

Content:

* Embodiment design: To include shafts, coupling, keyway, welded and bolted joint design, bearing, pulley, gear analysis. combined loadings, design factors and optimisation techniques.
* Design for PCB manufacture, Track analysis, layout optimization, advanced component selection, EMC considerations, packaging, thermal management
* Introduction to electronic interfaces and embedded digital systems.
* Types of connections to devices for input/output and interfaces.
* Introduction to assembly code.
