* To provide students with an introduction to key concepts in translation studies and intercultural communication
* To encourage students to develop critical, theoretical and practical approaches on working between different texts and different cultures
* To help students become familiar with working from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit, students will be able to:
* Demonstrate a critical understanding of key concepts to translation studies and intercultural communication
* Apply theoretical concepts from translation and intercultural communication to the analysis of texts, images and other forms of communication
* Critically reflect on translations of a variety of texts across languages and cultures which can use different means of expression
* Draw upon a range of skills (eg. creative, technological) to understand better communication across language and culture

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit. Creative skills and use of technology will also be developed.

Content:
Topics covered in this unit will include: What is intercultural communication?;Translation and the cultural turn; Representations and mediations of the Other; Interpreting texts (literary, visual, filmic, etc.); Translation as cultural mediation; Translation and popular culture; Translation/communication and the new technological era.
