Description: Aims:
To develop an understanding of building construction and materials. To integrate construction into the Design Studio. To establish standards of drawing technique and 'technical' drawing. To consider the development of the design process as the interaction between architecture and engineering, of various classes of structure. To consider in more detail the structural design of structures.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the connection between building design, the use of materials and the construction and assembly of buildings. They will also have knowledge of the broader context of how decisions about construction techniques are arrived at as well as be able to demonstrate their understanding of the structural design process in relation to various classes of structure.

Skills:
The skills required are:
* technical (working) drawing, notation and presentation
* knowledge of the application of basic building materials and finishes
* knowledge of the limitations and possibilities associated with various structural materials and structural systems within the holistic design of buildings

Content:
A series of lectures each covering a wide range of topics including :
* Elements of building construction illustrated by extracts from construction textbooks, building trade (product) information, case studies and a range of completed buildings.
* The role of multidisciplinary thinking and integration in the detail design process.
* The importance of understanding the process of construction
* Analysing and understanding how decisions are made on appropriate construction methods
* The structural design process. Basic concepts of static and structural action. Structural materials.
* Concepts of safety, stability and serviceability. Identification of architectural and structural concept in design.
* Comparison between efficiency and aesthetics of structures and buildings.
