Description: Aims:
To provide the basic principles of environmental design, with the aim to minimise the impact of buildings on the environment while maintaining human well-being within the building, primarily through passive means.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this Unit, students will be able to demonstrate the following:
Knowledge of:
* Principles associated with designing optimum visual, thermal and acoustic environments;
* Systems for environmental comfort realised within relevant precepts of sustainable design;
An understanding of:
* The impact of buildings on the environment, and the precepts of sustainable design.

Skills:
Analytical skills and drawing presentations of technical aspects.

Content:
Formal lectures on modifications of local climate by topography, passive heating and cooling, ventilation and indoor air quality, day-lighting design, atria and simplified modelling techniques for buildings' energy consumption. Tutorials will also be provided to introduce simplified thermal modelling tools. The Unit will be integrated with the Project of the Design Studio, where knowledge of these principles will have to be demonstrated as part of the Environmental Design Strategy.
