Description: Aims:
The aims of this Unit are twofold: firstly, to introduce students to the general ideas and ideals which have shaped cities; and secondly to familiarise the students with the techniques of urban analysis and principles of urban design.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this Unit, each student will have demonstrated an understanding of:
* the influences on the contemporary built environment of the design of cities;
* the histories and theories of urban design.
On completion of the Unit students will have demonstrated the ability to prepare an urban analysis of a given locale and an associated design task.

Skills:
Ability to analyse an urban context, and the communication skills required to present such an analysis.

Content:
The Unit will introduce the students to the policies that govern urban design and will introduce a methodology used to assess the architectural qualities and character of a complex urban area. The Unit will also contain formal lectures on the histories and theories of urban design. The Unit is integrated with the Design Studio projects.
