Unit Synopsis: Advance your knowledge and understanding of sustainable concrete use, including minimising the impact of concrete materials and novel design methods to reduce the use of concrete in buildings and other structures.
Unit Intended Learning Outcomes: Evaluate the production, manufacture and use of low carbon concrete technologies and other cementitious composites for modern construction.

Design and specify sustainable concrete structures and justify the need for optimisation and the appropriate choice of materials.

Critically evaluate current practice and new research led developments, and analyse the benefits and/or limitations of concrete technologies.
Unit Content:
  • Constituent materials of concrete (including cements, admixtures and aggregates);
  • Design of reinforced concrete elements;
  • Durability of concrete structures;
  • Mix proportioning;
  • Mixing, transportation and placing of concrete;
  • Design of prestressed concrete elements;
  • Special materials for concrete;
  • Strengthening of concrete structures.
