Description: Aims:
To provide an introduction to modern X-ray and neutron scattering techniques for materials characterisation.

Learning Outcomes:
After studying the Unit, students should be able to:
* Describe radiation sources used in X-ray and neutron experiments
* Calculate parameters based on small angle scattering and reflectivity data
* Demonstrate awareness of imaging and spectroscopy techniques using X-rays and neutrons
* Explain the differences between lab-based crystallography and that done at synchrotron and neutron sources.

Skills:
Written communication (T, F, A), Information handling & retrieval (T, F, A), independent working (F), problem solving (F, A).

Content:
Students will gain an understanding of the advanced X-ray and neutron techniques used to study a variety of chemical systems. Scattering techniques relevant to chemical studies such as small angle scattering, reflectivity, grazing incidence diffraction and crystallography will be studied, as well spectroscopic techniques such as EXAFS, QENS, INS.
