Further information on requisites Requisites:
Description: Aims:
To introduce quantitative aspects of noise control and to give an appreciation of some of the problems involved.
To acquaint the student with more advanced aspects of vibration.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
* Calculate sound pressure level given relevant power and material data. Estimate the reduction in sound pressure level that could be achieved by the use of a barrier or enclosure.
* Apply harmonic balance, phase-plane and energy methods to non-linear systems.
* Solve Rayleigh's equation to obtain limit cycle solutions and also to solve Duffing's equation and explain jump phenomena.

Skills:
Problem solving; numeracy; working independently.

Content:
Behaviour of sound waves: the wave equation and Helmholtz equation, resonance, standing waves, addition of sounds.
Response of the ear. Noise exposure and codes of practice.
Noise isolation and absorption, barriers and enclosures.
Nonlinear vibrating systems and their analysis using harmonic balance, phase plane diagrams and energy methods.
