Description: Aims:
This unit aims to provide students with detailed knowledge of two key periods: the history, politics and culture of the German Democratic Republic (1949-1990); the development of unified Germany from 1990 until the present day.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit, students will be able to
* demonstrate a critical understanding of the historical, political and cultural development of the GDR from its founding in 1949 to the peaceful revolution of 1989
* to understand the unification process of 1989-1990 and its consequences for the east and the west
* to understand united Germany's political and economic development since 1990 and its role in the contemporary world
* to analyse cultural developments in Germany since German unification, producing close readings of selected films and literary texts.

Skills:
Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, effective communication in the target language, teamwork and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are developed and assessed in this unit.

Content:
The unit will address the following topics: the founding of the GDR and the development of state socialism; the building of the Berlin Wall; the revolt of 17. June 1953; cultural policy in the GDR; the GDR economy; the situation of young people in the GDR; the collapse of the GDR regime; the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany; the development of the social market economy; the student revolt of 1968; left-wing terrorism in the Federal Republic; German unification and its consequences; Germany in the world today.
This unit is taught in German.
