Description: Aims:
This is the last of two units that aim to provide students with an introduction to a range of concepts central to the development of people through the Life Course. The main aim of this unit is to provide students with knowledge of human growth and development, psychological, social sciences, law and social work practice theory and to understand these concepts in relation to social work practice (as outlined by the HCPC Standards of Proficiency and The College of Social Work's Professional Capabilities Framework for students.
Specifically the unit aims to provide an understanding of social work practice in relation to:
* human growth and development across the lifespan and the impact of key developmental stages and transitions;
* the relevance of psychological, environmental, sociological and physiological perspectives to understanding personal and social development and functioning;
* the relevance of sociological perspectives to understanding societal and structural influences on human behaviour awareness of the different social and organisational contexts and settings within which social work operates and recognition of the roles of other professions, practitioners and organisations.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the unit students will be expected to be able to:
1. Demonstrate an initial understanding of the application of research, theory and knowledge from sociology, social policy, psychology, health and human growth and development to social work (PCF 5.1);
2. Recognise the short and long term impact of psychological, socio-economic, environmental and physiological factors on people's lives, taking into account age and development, and how this informs practice (PCF 5.4);
3. Recognise how systemic approaches can be used to understand the person-in-the-environment and inform your practice (PCF 5.5);
4. Acknowledge the centrality of relationships for people and the key concepts of attachment, separation, loss, change and resilience (PCF 5.6);
5. Understand forms of harm and their impact on people, and the implications for practice, drawing on concepts of strength, resilience, vulnerability, risk and resistance, and apply to practice (PCF 5.7);
6. Have an awareness of the sites of social work practice at the various stages of the Life Course (ie children and families; adolescent/youth; and adult care); (PCF 5.3)
7. Demonstrate awareness of the inter-agency, multi-disciplinary and inter-professional dimensions to social work practice with individuals and families across the Life Course (PCF 8.7)
8. Demonstrate an initial understanding of the range of theories and models for social work intervention with individuals, families, groups and communities across different stages of the Life Course; (PCF 5.8)
9. Begin to apply social work knowledge to human social development using problem based learning exercises. (PCF 5.3)

Skills:
After completing this unit students should be able to:
1. engage in problem based learning exercises independently and within small groups; (taught and facilitated)
2. be able to identify social work roles and functions through problem based learning exercises; (taught facilitated and assessed)
3. show critical thinking in the application of Life Course concepts within social work practice. (taught, facilitated and assessed).
