The National Assembly for Wales has, since 2001, funded the development of a new post-16 programme known as the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification (WBQ). Offered originally at two levels, Advanced and Intermediate, and with a Foundation level also now being piloted, it requires students to complete optional components (which may be, eg, A levels or vocational qualifications) as well as a compulsory core which includes a specially-designed course entitled Wales, Europe and the World. Three cohorts of a total of 31 schools and colleges have been involved in the current pilot phase, with students having begun the two year programme in each of September 2003, September 2004 and September 2005. The pilot phase will finish in summer 2007, after which the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning, Jane Davidson, has announced it will be rolled out more widely. The Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification is being developed and piloted by the Cardiff-based Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC), directed by Keith Davies. See www.wbq.org.uk for further details. The University of Bath have, since the inception of the pilot, been Internal Evaluators for the project, providing on-going formative evaluation and reporting on a regular basis to the WJEC Welsh Baccalaureate Project Team and to the Welsh Assembly.
