Midge Ure OBE

Midge UreMidge Ure OBE has been a singer-songwriter and guitarist since the 1970s but is best known for Ultravox and his leading role in the creation of Band Aid and the world-selling single Do they know it’s Christmas? Together with Bob Geldof, Midge organised the global concert Live Aid which brought their fundraising for famine relief in Africa to an estimated £150 million.

From his studio in Bath he writes and produces with a variety of artists, with his own band, with the reformed Ultravox and in solo acoustic shows. He remains a Band Aid Trustee and his work with charities has included the musical directorship of projects for the Prince’s Trust and Breakthrough. He is also an ambassador for Save the Children.

Midge will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws at the 3pm ceremony on Tuesday 14 December. 


Roger Porkess

Roger PorkessRoger Porkess is Project Leader for Mathematics in Education & Industry, an independent curriculum development body. He has initiated and developed many recent innovations in school mathematics and statistics and been involved with over 80 books on the subject.

Often invited to contribute to national discussions and to speak at conferences, he is also heavily involved in school examinations, particularly at A Level. Roger will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Education at the 12.30pm ceremony on Wednesday 15 December.


Marcus du Sautoy OBE

Marcus du SautoyMarcus du Sautoy OBE is the Charles Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of New College. He is an acclaimed mathematician and has won many awards for achievements in communicating science. 

The author of numerous academic articles and books on mathematics, he has also written best-selling books aimed at the general public. He writes for a number of national newspapers and has written, produced and presented programmes and series on radio and television. Marcus will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science at the 3pm ceremony on Wednesday 15 December.
