An undergraduate from our Sport & Exercise Science programme has landed a top job with Manchester City Football Club.

Jonathan Woodhouse, 22, who graduates today (Wednesday) as part of this summer’s graduation ceremonies, will take on the new role providing sport science and strength and conditioning support within the Premiership club’s Academy from August.

During his four-year degree at Bath, Jonathan completed a year’s placement at Southampton FC, helping to expand his knowledge in a practical, applied environment and giving him an important leg up the ladder when it came to looking for jobs in a highly competitive environment.

Of his new role, Jonathan said: “The programme at Bath has been integral to my development in terms of the background it has provided me, from physiology of the elite athlete to presentation and analytical skills. The opportunity to gain experience in the industry was vital, without which, I would not be in the privileged position I am in now.

“My roles will include providing physiological support by evaluating data to implement necessary strategies, assisting and delivering daily training programmes and supporting on-field rehabilitation sessions, tailored to specific individual needs. I am excited by the prospect of working at Manchester City Football Club and the chance to work within modern world class facilities in an elite environment.

“In such a competitive industry, the programme at Bath and placement opportunities provides fantastic opportunities for students to differentiate themselves from other graduates.”

Within the new role, Jonathan hopes to continue his professional development as well as study for a Master’s degree in the near future.

Jonathan’s tutor whilst at Bath, Dr James Betts from the Department for Health, added: “Ever since our first tutor group meeting in year one, Jonathan has consistently impressed me with his focused and mature approach to study.

“Beyond academic achievements, I supported Jonathan as his personal tutor during his professional placement at Southampton FC, where it was very clear to me that he had a natural aptitude for applied science and I know he impressed his placement supervisors greatly.

“It therefore comes as no surprise to me that someone with Jonathan’s rare combination of scientific and practical skills would be selected for such a prestigious position as Sports Scientist at Manchester City Academy.”

Our Sport & Exercise Science programme offers students essential theoretical knowledge with practical applications underlying sport and exercise performance and participation.

It provides a multi-disciplinary approach focussing on the core scientific disciplines including biomechanics, physiology and psychology. In addition, all students are given the opportunity to gain invaluable experience within the industry by completing a professional placement year.
