Barry Chapman is the only Chaplain who is also a University employee. He is a member of staff in the Department of Physics, where he has been since Harold Wilson was Prime Minister!
Barry was licensed as a Chaplain by the Bishop of Bath and Wells in 1983 and he is also involved in church work in a parish in Bradford-on-Avon where he lives. So for those who like labels, that puts him under the Anglican umbrella, although at the University Chaplaincy at Bath we all work together across denominations.
Having stood on the side lines of higher education these many years and observed the trends and fashions, the question of University life is 'Where did the former ideals of education go - the search for a fuller humanity, the rounded citizen, the cultured individual?' Is the Chaplaincy the last place on this site where such questions are still asked?
