Students reach Best Beer Competition finals

beer logo 1 Four postgraduate students in the Department of Chemical Engineering have earned a place to present at the UK finals of a competition organised by multi-national brewing conglomerate AB InBev.

The team, captained by Peter Bechervaise and including Simon Owens, Nuno Bimbo and Iain Argyle, entered a concept proposal for a new beer that could be added to the AB InBev portfolio. The competition specified the entry should be closely linked to the ethos of the University of Bath, capturing the spirit of what makes the University a unique learning experience and institution of research excellence.

The concept, named Sulis Core, is an apple flavoured beer produced locally and sustainably in the surrounds of Bath with key focus on low energy brewing techniques. Regional provenance and ethical sourcing of ingredients are central to the brand identity. The concept also focused on incorporating the AB InBev better world programs, an initiative set up to promote responsible drinking accross the globe as well as helping to improve social and technological standards in less developed regions.

The team will give a presentation and show their promotional video in London on 29 February 2012. The advert can be viewed on YouTube - the team are hoping to get lots of views from staff and students at the University.

For more information about the competition visit the Best Beer Competition Website.

The team would also like to thank all who have helped them get this far, especially the staff at Bath Ales.
