Dr Victoria Garcia Rocha

Profile

Dr Victoria Rocha studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Oviedo in Asturias, Spain.  In 2008, she completed her PhD at the University of Oviedo followed by a short period as Quality and R&D Manager at a local SME.

In 2009, Victoria joined ITMA Materials Technology, a technological research centre in Asturias, where she worked as a post-doctoral research assistant before joining Bath University as a Postgraduate Research Officer.

Victoria's main research as a postdoc has been focused on synthesis, characterisation and consolidation of nanostructured ceramic materials and ceramic-carbon nanocomposites.  Victoria also has extensive experience in carbon materials science. During her PhD, and as a Research Associate, she has been in constant contact with industrial partners, including short stays at Repsol YPF and The Institute for Materials Research (The University of Leeds).

At ITMA Materials Technology, Victoria was involved in upgrading the processing of technical and nanostructured ceramics from R&D to production scale.

Research

Victoria's current research looks into nanoporous carbon materials, as they are critical components in all energy storage devices (lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, flow batteries, and fuel cells), which underpin many crucial technology growth areas. For example, energy storage plays a central role in smoothing power generation from transient sources such as wind, and improved storage devices will be key to the wider acceptance of hybrid and electric vehicles.
