Dr Elias Martinez Hernandez

PhD AMIChemE SMAIChE AFHEA

Elias is a member of academic staff. His research is on biomass conversion and biorefineries, waste processing, process systems modelling and analysis.

Role

Dr Elias Martinez Hernandez was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering in 2016. His role includes teaching, research and administrative duties.

  • Visiting Lecturer at the University of Surrey
  • Associate Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy
  • Associate Member of the IChemE
  • Senior Member of the AIChE
  • Founding member of the Institution of Biorefinery Engineers, Scientists and Technologists (IBEST)

Career achievements

Between 2013 and 2016, Elias worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Surrey in the Centre for Environmental Strategy and then at University of Oxford in the Department of Engineering Science. He then took up his post as Lecturer in Chemical Engineering at University of Bath.

Elias has also organised successful early-career researcher workshops (funded by the Newton Fund) from which productive research collaborations have emerged between the UK and Mexico, and UK and Malaysia in the area of biorefineries.

He was awarded a visiting scholar grant to visit University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus to develop a project to make rubber industry more sustainable using a techno-ecological approach, working with researchers at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Tropical Environmental Studies (MINDSET) in 2015.

Education

  • MEng Chemical Engineering, National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Mexico City
  • PhD in Process Integration, University of Manchester

Research

Elias’s research focuses on the areas of process development of integrated biorefineries for biofuel, chemicals and materials production from biomass and wastes. He also researches sustainable chemical engineering using methodologies such as life cycle assessment, techno-ecological approaches and also looking at the food-energy-water nexus, with the aim to develop knowledge and understanding to develop sustainable production processes and systems. Elias is a developer of user friendly software and website applications to implement analysis tools and to communicate results to wider audiences.

Interests

  • Analysis and design of biomass conversion to biofuels, chemicals and polymers in integrated biorefineries
  • Renewable energy systems analysis and design
  • Food-energy-water nexus
  • Chemical and biochemical process integration, simulation and optimisation
  • Life cycle assessment (LCA) of energy and chemical process systems
