Postgraduate research

We carry out advanced research in many areas of chemical, biochemical and biomedical engineering. 

Areas of interest include:

  • Stem cell research
  • Drug delivery
  • Microreactors
  • Hydrogen production and storage
  • Computational fluid dynamics
  • Membrane separation processes
  • Water treatment.

We are funded by research councils, the Department for Trade and Industry, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the British Council, the EU, government research agencies and industry.

Types of research degree

We offer two types of research degree. A Master of Philosophy (MPhil) typically takes two years full-time or four years part-time. A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) typically takes three years full-time or five years part-time.

We have also established the Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) in Sustainable Chemical Technologies, an innovative four-year doctoral programme that focuses on sustainability. We offer at least ten fully-funded PhD places in the DTC each year.
