Commonwealth Scholarships

The Commonwealth Scholarships Schemes help Commonwealth citizens study at postgraduate level in the UK.

Developing Commonwealth countries

Commonwealth Scholarships for PhD study in the UK are offered for citizens of developing Commonwealth countries.

These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, supporting excellence in UK higher education, and sustaining the principles of the Commonwealth.

High income Commonwealth countries

The Commonwealth Scholarships for citizens of high income countries support excellence in UK higher education and sustain the principles of the Commonwealth. Candidates will be selected based on their potential to lead in the pursuit of global excellence in research and knowledge, as well as academic merit and the quality of their plan of study.

The awards are funded by the UK Department for Education (DfE).

Newton Fund

The British Council’s Newton PhD programme aims to develop science and innovation partnerships that promote the economic development and welfare of its 18 collaborating countries.

PhD Scholarships provide funding for individual partner country students to undertake full PhD studies in the UK, or vice versa.

PhD placements provide funding for individual partner country PhD students to spend a period of their study (up to one year) in the UK, or vice versa.

China

China Scholarship Council: University of Bath PhD programme

You can apply for this scholarship if you are a Chinese citizen who wants to study at the University of Bath.

  • Scholarship value: Scholarships include funding for travel between China and the UK, a stipend to cover living costs and international tuition fees. The duration of each scholarship will be up to 48 months.
  • Scholarships available: unknown
  • Scheme opens: November 2017
  • Scheme closes: 22 January 2018

You need to:

  • be a citizen and permanent resident of the People’s Republic of China at the time of application. Overseas Chinese students may be eligible for application subject to CSC policy
  • meet the selection criteria set out by CSC

The Ko PhD Scholarships

You can apply for this scholarship if you are a Chinese student studying for a PhD in either the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering and Design.

  • Scholarship value: The scholarship will provide a stipend to cover living costs and an allowance for research related costs for each year of study (up to a maximum of four years). The value of the scholarship will depend on the applicant’s financial position and the extent of matched funding available to the applicant. The maximum available will be £20,000 per year. The successful applicant will also receive a University scholarship to the value of 50% of the applicable overseas tuition fees

You need to:

  • be a citizen and permanent resident of the People’s Republic of China at the time of application
  • be planning to undertake a PhD in October 2018 in either the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering and Design and have identified a supervisor for their project

Canada

Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund (CCSF)

The CCSF provides awards for Canadian students, pursuing academic and artistic postgraduate studies in the UK.

  • Scholarship value: £2,000 - £5,000
  • Scholarships available: 15
  • Scheme opens: Autumn 2017
  • Scheme closes: 9 March 2018

You need to:

  • be a Canadian citizen
  • have already started your postgraduate course

Paraguay

BECAL Scholarships for Paraguayan Postgraduate Researchers

You can apply for this scholarship if you are a student from Paraguay who wants to undertake doctoral study at the University of Bath.

  • Scholarship value: reduced tuition fees for a period of up to four years, subject to the student’s satisfactory progress
  • Scholarships available: variable
  • Scheme opens: 15 February 2018
  • Scheme closes: 15 April 2018

You need to:

  • be Paraguayan, or naturalised
  • be under the age of 40

Australia

Australian Bicentennial Scholarships & Fellowships

You can apply for these awards if you are UK postgraduate student or academic staff wanting to undertake a period of study or research in Australia, or you are an Australian graduate who wants to study in the UK.

  • Scholarship value: up to £4,000
  • Scholarships available: variable
  • Scheme opens: 23 February 2018
  • Scheme closes: 27 April 2018

You need to be:

  • an Australian or UK citizen
  • a postgraduate student or member of academic staff

Mexico

CONACyT Scholarships

The University has an agreement with the Mexican Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia (CONACyT) to provide funding for new Mexican PhD students.

  • Scholarship value: Students admitted by the University and funded by CONACyT will receive a tuition fee contribution and a stipend towards living costs from CONACyT. The University will provide a 25% tuition fee discount for students sponsored by CONACyT.
