To introduce students to the key elements of electric vehicle and related systems design. These will cover the essential design elements of accumulators, electric motors for electric vehicles, automotive standards relating to electric vehicle design, charging systems and power electronics for electric vehicles.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this unit students should be able to:

  • describe the key concepts in electric vehicle (EV) propulsion, charging, energy storage and management systems
  • design an electric vehicle system to an overall specification
  • simulate an electric vehicle system to evaluate overall performance
  • appreciate the requirements for an electric vehicle accumulator, battery management system and recharging system
