The Mental Health Team
The Student Mental Health Team is staffed by people with a background working in NHS Mental Health services, this includes working in the fields of psychiatric nursing and psychological therapies. They have a very good understanding of the types of mental health problem people might experience, the ways in which these can impact people’s life/work/study etc. and the various medical, psychological and social interventions that can help people feel better and achieve their goals in life. Having worked within NHS services they have extensive experience of how these services operate and are skilled at working alongside doctors, nurses and other professionals to help individuals
What the Mental Health Team offer
The Mental Health Team offer a wide range of services to students and the University, main examples are;
- Assessment of individuals mental health and needs
- On-going support with individuals mental health
- Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy
- CBT based interventions
- Support and information around medication
- Support and advice around mental health and academic study/University life
- Liaising with Academic departments to ensure support
- Liaising with other University services to ensure support (accommodation, resident tutors etc)
- Liaising with NHS services to ensure support (GP, Community Psychiatric Nurse, Psychiatrist/Psychologist)
- Support to students having to suspend their studies due to Mental Health problems, and support to students returning from a period of suspension
- Advice and consultation on mental health issues for University staff
- Staff training on Mental Health
