Engineering Design MSc

1 year, starting in October 2018

Apply your engineering skills to a master’s degree that focuses on design. Use your knowledge and creativity to come up with new products and services.

If you have a strong background in engineering and mathematics and are looking to apply your skills more creatively, our master's is an excellent choice for you.

Our course brings together both the practical and creative aspects of designing new products and services. You'll integrate creative design techniques with a grounding in engineering and mathematics. Drawing on your analytical knowledge, you'll apply engineering principles to new design challenges. Exploring how design impacts all sectors of industry gives you a broader understanding of how it overlaps with engineering.

Project work allows you to use technical skills and your initiative to design, test and build working products. Many of our students choose to develop products or services that solve real environmental, social or economic problems.

You’ll learn from academics with professional, teaching and research expertise in mechanical engineering and design. Their industrial collaborations and research in product design and manufacturing feed into your teaching and learning experience. We also involve our industrial partners in the delivery of our course. This enriches your learning experience with the latest thinking and practice in industry.

You’ll have access to teaching and research laboratories that support a range of activities. Our facilities are designed to be similar to industrial workspaces so that you can gain insight into what it is like to work in a professional environment. Your project work will be carried out in our advanced 3D printing, design and CAD labs.   You’ll graduate with:

  • The creative, technical and managerial skills you need to start a career as a design engineer
  • A solid understanding of the issues associated with creativity and innovation
  • Knowledge and experience of the global commercial environment
  • The expertise to manage engineering design projects and teams

Our graduates have gone on to work with environmental design and design consultancies in the UK and overseas. Some of our graduates have secured jobs at DNV GL (formerly Garrad Hassan), ABB Research and Dyson. We also encourage our best performing MSc students to continue their studies with us on our PhD programme.
