Our course gives you a thorough grounding in the principles and practices of chemical engineering. You’ll develop professional skills in engineering, mathematics, material science, information technology, research and design, communication and management.

Throughout the course, you’ll reinforce lecture material with practical lab sessions, learning how to gather and analyse data to develop industrial strategies. You’ll explore modern practical technologies and gain a comprehensive understanding of process design. There will be opportunities for you to develop other useful skills such as planning, problem solving, teamwork and resource management. You’ll integrate these with your technical knowledge to solve complex engineering problems.

Individual and group design projects are a key feature of your studies. In your first and second year, you’ll work on practical lab tasks, learning how to develop scientific ideas from the bench scale to process scale. You can explore topics in more depth through a semester-long research project that can be completed at Bath, a university abroad or in industry. These include:

  • chemical process modelling and simulation
  • advanced separations
  • nanotechnology
  • catalysis
  • water engineering
  • sustainable engineering practices

Your final year includes a whole semester dedicated to a business-oriented product and process design project. You’ll explore the design of consumer goods and the chemical or biochemical process plant to produce them. This is a chance for you to bring together all four years of study and apply it practically.

All our degrees have been awarded the highest level of professional accreditation by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). Choosing the MEng route gives you a more in-depth study experience through advanced taught units and semester-long individual and group project work. It also gives you the educational requirements you need to become a Chartered Engineer.


Our department is a friendly and supportive environment to study in. You’ll learn from academics with expertise in chemical and biochemical engineering. Their industrial collaborations and research activities feed into undergraduate teaching and contribute to your learning experience. Guest lectures from practitioners during your degree give you a professional perspective on the subject.


Specialist facilities are central to our teaching and research environment, and your study experience. Our computing and laboratory facilities range from bench scale to pilot scale. They are specially equipped to enhance your education in becoming a chemical engineer.

Course structure

This course lasts 5 years. It starts in September 2018 and ends in 2023. Induction week starts on 24 September 2018.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. As part of your course, you will take compulsory units covering key concepts. You may also be able to take optional units which assist you in developing your own interests.

You need to take 60 credits in each year of your course (usually split equally into 30 credits for each semester), so the number of optional units you can take depends on the number of compulsory units in each year of the course.

Six credits are the equivalent of at least 120 hours of study, including contact time with staff and independent study.

A placement gives you the chance to experience the workplace and develop skills in a commercial or industrial environment. And it is an opportunity to earn a salary during your degree.

All our courses include optional year-long paid placements with some of the world’s most successful companies. We have well-established partnerships with chemical and biochemical engineering industries, as well as other sectors. This gives you access to a range of opportunities through our dedicated placements team.

The professional skills you gain on placement can benefit the rest of your degree and improve your career prospects. It is an excellent opportunity to make industry contacts and is often used as a recruitment tool by major companies. Our students have worked at companies such as Exxon Mobil, BP and Kraft foods.

Professional accreditations

By studying a course with a professional accreditation, you could have the chance to get workplace experience, learn about new developments in the industry and apply for membership with the accrediting body. You may also be able to apply for jobs in the industry without having to do any more exams.

Entry requirements

Your application, especially your personal statement, should explain your motivation for choosing this degree and any relevant non-academic interests and achievements. Your application is more likely to be successful if you demonstrate a strong interest in chemical engineering through relevant reading, extracurricular or co-curricular activities, or work experience. We also favour applicants who show an ability to write and reflect analytically and thoughtfully.

Your previous academic study is also important. For example, if you have taken GCSEs then we prefer applicants with a strong set (such as grade A*, 8 or 9 in at least five GCSEs or grade A or 7 in the majority of your GCSEs). We also prefer applicants with strong Mathematics and Chemistry GCSE grades. This is in addition to our essential GCSE requirements.

You will need a strong performance in both Mathematics and Chemistry as part of your entry qualifications. We prefer applicants who have also studied Physics, Biology or have additional study in Mathematics (such as Further Mathematics A level), with Physics being the most useful to prepare you for studying this course.

If you are taking A levels, we may be unable to consider an A level in your own language (unless it is English or Welsh). We do not accept A levels in General Studies. If you are taking a GCE A level in a science subject, you will need to pass any separate science practical endorsement.

Typical offer A level


A*AA including Mathematics and Chemistry, with A* in Chemistry or Mathematics (or Further Mathematics if applicable).

A preference for Further Mathematics, Physics or Biology as the third A level subject.

A level General Studies will not be considered. We may be unable to consider an A level in your own language (unless it is English or Welsh).

Alternative offer A level


AAA including Mathematics and Chemistry plus one of the following:

  • grade A in an EPQ
  • grade B in the Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate
  • grade M1 in Cambridge Pre-U Global Perspectives

Students presenting with one of the above project qualifications should receive both the typical offer and the alternative.

Typical offers for other qualifications

International Baccalaureate

36 points overall and 7, 6, 6 in three Higher Level subjects including Chemistry and Mathematics.

Access to HE Diploma

Typical offer:
Pass the Access to HE Diploma (in Science or Engineering), with at least 39 credits achieved at Distinction. This must include at least 12 credits from Mathematics units achieved at Distinction and at least 12 credits from Chemistry units achieved at Distinction.

Our Chemical Engineering courses are academically challenging and require solid foundations of knowledge in Mathematics and Chemistry. We are able to consider Access to HE Diplomas in Science or Engineering, and we are looking for you to be studying a suitable level of Mathematics and Chemistry to be able to succeed on our course. You will need to have studied Mathematics units worth at least 12 credits and Chemistry units worth at least 12 credits. However, due to the time-limited nature of Access programme delivery, it is expected that you will have also completed a significant level of independent study in order to further develop and refine these skills.


Typical offer:
D*D*D* in the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (QCF)/ BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (RQF) plus grade A in A level Mathematics.

We are able to consider the above BTEC qualifications in Engineering in combination with A level Mathematics. You must be studying the following units as part of your BTEC qualification:

  • Extended Diploma (QCF): Further Mathematics for Technicians, Mechanical Principles and Applications, Principles and Applications of Thermodynamics, and Principles and Applications of Fluid Mechanics

  • Extended Diploma (RQF): Further Engineering Mathematics, Principles and Application of Fluid Mechanics, and Thermodynamic Principles and Practice

In addition to our essential GCSE requirements in Mathematics and English, we also require grade C or 4 in Double Science or Physics and Biology.

Open University Credits

Typically, we would be looking for you to have studied units worth at least 120 credits, including at least 30 credits at Level 2 in Mathematics. We would ideally be looking for you to be taking units including:

  • S215: Chemistry: Essential Concepts
  • MST124: Essential Mathematics 1 and MST224: Mathematical Methods

This information is a guide and all students applying with Open University Credits will be considered on a case-by-case basis. We will consider your application carefully and take note of any previous qualifications or relevant work experience. We may be able to consider alternative units to those listed. Please contact us to discuss your profile.

Typical offer:
Pass units worth 120 credits, including a minimum of a Pass 2 with 80% in a relevant Level 2 Mathematics unit worth at least 30 credits.

Please note that taking OU credits may be counted as degree-level study by the Student Loans Company and therefore may be counted as previous study and have an impact on your ability to access student loans/grants for the entirety of your chosen degree. We recommend that you discuss this in detail with the SLC before following this progression route to the University of Bath.

AA in Advanced Highers including Mathematics and Chemistry plus AAAAA in Scottish Highers.

We can consider combinations of accepted qualifications, such as A levels and a BTEC.

We can also consider combinations that are not listed and that do not include A levels. You should read the information about essential and preferred subjects and subject combinations. We cannot consider different qualifications in the same subject area.

United States of America qualifications

Advanced Placement Tests

5, 5, 5 in 3 APs including Calculus BC and Chemistry.

We cannot consider Calculus AB as one of these 3 subjects.

You will also need to pass your High School Diploma and achieve an ACT score of 30 or SATR scores of 740 in both Mathematics and Evidence based Reading and Writing.

SAT Subject Tests

We do not accept SAT Subject Tests for direct entry to our degrees.

India qualifications

Higher Secondary School Certificate (12th Standard)

Average of 85% across 4 subjects with 85% in Chemistry and Mathematics.

We do not accept Physical Education as one of these 4 subjects.
