Develop skills in mathematics and software development, preparing you for roles that involve computational analysis, modelling and simulation.

Computer science and mathematics are closely linked. Many of the leading applications of computing are mathematical and computers are fundamentally logic engines.

This joint degree course is for you if you enjoy and excel at computing but want to combine that with an interest in mathematics.

In the first two years you’ll study a mix of mathematics and computing units. You will study computational approaches to finding patterns in data and the generation of computational models. You will also share lectures with Mathematical Sciences students to study fundamental algebra and mathematical analysis. In the final year you can choose to specialise in areas of numerical computer science and mathematics.

Computer scientists with good mathematical knowledge are in great demand worldwide. On graduation you can apply what you’ve learnt to roles in software development that rely on a combination of mathematical and computational modelling, such as data analysis and forecasting.

Course structure

This course lasts 3 years. It starts in September 2018 and ends in 2021. Induction week starts on 24 September 2018.

Units

As part of your course, you will take compulsory units covering key concepts. You may also be able to take optional units which assist you in developing your own interests.

You need to take 60 credits in each year of your course (usually split equally into 30 credits for each semester), so the number of optional units you can take depends on the number of compulsory units in each year of the course.

Six credits are the equivalent of at least 120 hours of study, including contact time with staff and independent study.

Entry requirements

Your application, especially your personal statement, should demonstrate your enthusiasm for studying computer science and mathematics. This might include relevant reading, voluntary or work experience, hobbies or other relevant extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. When describing your experiences you should reflect on what you have learnt from them, how they have influenced your development or how they are relevant to your future studies.

Strong performance in Mathematics is essential, both in your entry qualifications and any previous study. If you are studying A levels we strongly prefer that you take a full A level in Further Mathematics, which forms part of our typical offer. Offers are available for applicants who have only studied Further Mathematics at AS level or have not studied it at all. We prefer applicants who have previously studied Computing, however, you do not need to have done so to be suitable for this course.

As this degree includes a high level of advanced mathematics, we also recommend you consider taking a STEP exam, as this can provide excellent preparation for studying university level Mathematics. If you are taking both Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A level STEP, any offer will include an alternative condition that includes a STEP grade (or the GCE Advanced Extension Award). For applicants taking some qualifications (such as the International Baccalaureate), STEP may be entirely optional. For others STEP may be required.

If you are taking A levels, we may be unable to consider an A level in your own language (unless it is English or Welsh). We do not accept A levels in General Studies. If you are taking a GCE A level in a science subject, you will need to pass any separate science practical endorsement.

For applicants not taking A level Further Mathematics:

AAA or A*AB including A in Mathematics, plus A in AS Further Mathematics, plus either grade 2 in STEP or a Merit in the GCE AEA in Mathematics.

A level subjects that will not be considered in your application

A level General Studies will not be considered. We may be unable consider an A level in your own language (unless it is English or Welsh).

Alternative offer A level

AAB

Including grade A in Mathematics and Further Mathematics plus one of the following:

  • grade A in an EPQ
  • grade B in the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate
  • grade M1 in Cambridge Pre-U Global Perspectives

Students presenting with one of the above project qualifications should receive both the typical offer and the alternative.

International Baccalaureate

36 points overall and 6, 6, 6 or 7, 6, 5 in three Higher Level subjects including 6 in Mathematics.

Access to HE Diploma

Unfortunately Access to HE Diplomas are not a suitable route for this course. You are welcome to apply for our other courses within the Department, including Computer Science and Computer Science with Business.

BTEC

Unfortunately BTEC Level 3 Extended Diplomas (QCF)/ BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (RQF) are not a suitable route for this course. You are welcome to apply for our other courses within the Department, including Computer Science and Computer Science with Business.

Combinations of qualifications

Your application will be considered individually based on the particular combination of qualifications and subjects that you are taking.

We can consider combinations of accepted qualifications, such as A levels and a BTEC.

We may be able to consider combinations of qualifications that include an AS level rather than an A level in Further Mathematics. You will likely be required to obtain a grade 2 in any STEP or Merit in the GCE AEA in Mathematics. Please contact us to discuss your profile.

  • AA in A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, plus D in the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma (QCF)/National Extended Certificate (RQF) OR the Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma (QCF)/Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate (RQF)
  • AA in two A level subjects plus grade D3 in a Pre-U Principal Subject including Mathematics and Further Mathematics
  • AA in A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, plus A in the IFS Diploma in Financial Studies

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education

55 in 2 elective subjects plus 5* in core Mathematics and 5* in the Algebra and Calculus extended paper plus grade 2 in any STEP.

France qualifications

French Baccalaureate

15 overall with 15 in Mathematics plus grade 2 in any STEP.

Option Internationale Baccalaureate (OIB)

14 overall with 15 in Mathematics plus grade 2 in any STEP.

European Baccalaureate qualifications

European Baccalaureate

82% overall with 9.0 in Mathematics plus either 9.0 in Advanced Mathematics or grade 2 in any STEP.

India qualifications

Higher Secondary School Certificate (12th Standard)

Average of 80% across 4 subjects with 90% in Mathematics.

We do not accept Physical Education as one of these 4 subjects.

These requirements are for the CBSE, HSSC and ISC boards. Please contact us if you are taking this qualification with a different board.

United States of America qualifications

Advanced Placement Tests

5, 5, 5 in 3 APs including Calculus BC plus grade 2 in any STEP.

We cannot consider Calculus AB as one of these 3 subjects.

You will also need to pass your High School Diploma and achieve an ACT score of 30 or SATR scores of 720 in both Mathematics and Evidence based Reading and Writing.

SAT Subject Tests

We do not accept SAT Subject Tests for direct entry to our degrees.
