This course is new for 2018.

Our course is for aspiring engineers who want to contribute to the future of an expanding industry. You’ll advance your knowledge in areas of robotics, artificial intelligence and electronics systems at the forefront of engineering and design.

In your first two years, you will learn the underlying principles of electronic, electrical and mechanical engineering. You’ll combine this with aspects of computer science to give you a comprehensive overview of robotics engineering.

To become a skilled engineer, it is important for you to be able to develop your technical design skills. That’s why our course places project work at the centre of your learning experience. Group projects challenge you to work in teams to solve practical engineering problems. As well as gaining hands-on experience, you’ll also develop valuable managerial and business skills. You can join one of our student teams who compete annually. These include Team Bath Racing Electric, Bath Drones and the autonomous underwater systems team.

You’ll complete your degree with an individual project. This is your chance to focus on where you want to build your expertise. You could explore areas of robotics and autonomous systems, artificial intelligence and systems engineering.

You’ll graduate with an in-depth understanding of the operation, components and techniques of robotics engineering. Your studies will prepare you for a career in robotics and automation in areas such as robotic systems design, autonomous systems and medical robotics.

Choosing the MEng route gives you a more in-depth study experience through advanced taught units and semester-long individual and group project work. It also gives you the educational requirements you need to become a Chartered Engineer.

Teaching

You’ll learn from academics with expertise in electronic and electrical engineering. Their international collaborations and research activities feed into undergraduate teaching and contribute to your learning experience.

Facilities

You'll have access to facilities specially equipped for your degree. Our facilities are designed to be similar to industrial workspaces so you gain an insight into what it is like to work in a professional environment. These include laboratories for tomography, superconductivity, autonomous systems and robotics. We also have facilities for optoelectronics and circuit board prototyping, and a mechanical workshop.

Careers

We work with industrial partners to make sure our course content reflects the needs of engineering industries. You’ll graduate with the technical expertise and transferable skills that will open up employment opportunities for you. You can pursue a career in high-technology industries in electronics, power, aerospace, communication, robotics or manufacturing. Or you could find employment in other sectors such as IT, financial services, accountancy, the armed forces or business. Many of our graduates continue their studies to pursue an academic or research career.

Course structure

This course lasts 5 years. It starts in September 2018 and ends in 2023. Induction week starts on 24 September 2018.

Placement

Our course offers an optional placement year as part of your degree. Going on placement gives you the chance to apply your theoretical knowledge to the workplace and learn about the technologies and processes used in industry. It is also an opportunity to earn a salary during your degree. You’ll develop your skills in a professional environment and learn about sophisticated engineering systems. Having professional experience can benefit the rest of your degree as well as improve your career prospects.

Our links with industry mean that we can offer you placement opportunities with major companies, smaller businesses and government research organisations.

Entry requirements

Your application, especially your personal statement, should explain your motivation for choosing this degree and any relevant non-academic interests and achievements. Your application is more likely to be successful if you demonstrate a strong interest in robotics through relevant reading, extracurricular or co-curricular activities, or work experience.

You will need a strong performance in both Mathematics and Physics or Engineering as part of your entry qualifications.

  • grade A in an EPQ
  • grade B in the Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate

36 credits at Distinction

A pass in the Access to HE Diploma (in Science or Engineering), with at least 36 credits achieved at Distinction and 3 credits achieved at Merit or above. This must include 12 credits from Mathematics units (including Calculus) achieved at Distinction and 12 credits from Physics units achieved at Distinction.

Typical offer Open University credits

Pass units worth 120 credits, including S207: The Physical World or S217: Physics: From Classical to Quantum and a Pass 2 with 75% in a relevant Level 2 Mathematics unit worth at least 30 credits.

You are typically expected to study units worth at least 120 credits including at least 30 credits at Level 2 in Mathematics. You should ideally be taking units including one of S207: The Physical World or S217: Physics: From Classical to Quantum alongside MST124: Essential Mathematics 1 and MST224: Mathematical Methods. This information is a guide and we consider students applying with Open University Credits on a case-by-case basis. We will consider your application carefully and take note of any previous qualifications or relevant work experience. We may be able to consider alternative units to those listed. Please contact us to discuss your profile.

Please note that taking OU credits may be counted as degree-level study by the Student Loans Company and therefore have an impact on your ability to access student loans/grants for the entirety of your degree. We recommend that you discuss this in detail with the SLC before following this progression route to the University of Bath.

  • AA in two A level subjects plus grade D3 in a Pre-U Principal Subject including Mathematics and Physics
  • AA in two A level subjects plus 6 in an IB HL Certificate including Mathematics and Physics. While we do not consider the IB Careers Programme for entry, we are able to consider the combinations of components that are typically offered by this route, such as BTEC and IB HL Certificate combinations
  • AA in A level Mathematics and Physics, plus A in the IFS Diploma in Financial Studies

We can also consider combinations that are not listed and that do not include A levels. You should read the information about essential and preferred subjects and subject combinations. We cannot consider different qualifications in the same subject area.

You will also need to pass your High School Diploma and achieve an ACT score of 30 or SATR scores of 720 in both Mathematics and Evidence based Reading and Writing.
