5 years with a placement year, starting in September 2018

Understand the principles of aerospace engineering science and explore the latest thinking in aircraft design and manufacture.

The first two years of this course give you a detailed understanding of core mechanical engineering principles. You’ll learn how to use mathematics and computing to analyse engineering systems, and develop knowledge in design and manufacturing processes. You can switch to any of our five mechanical engineering degrees up to the end of your second year.

You’ll study aircraft performance, control and structures, composites, aerodynamics, propulsion and space flight. Lectures are balanced with laboratory work to give you the skills you need to build, analyse and test a product. So that you can develop a full understanding of aircraft from design to manufacture, you’ll visit an aerospace manufacturing company and take a flight test course at a local airfield.

You’ll work on a group project to design a new aircraft to a specification given by industry or for entry into a competition such as the annual unmanned aircraft systems challenge. In your final year, you’ll choose from a range of specialist units and complete an individual research project that could be based on simulation, experimentation or design.

Our MEng degrees give you an in-depth study experience through advanced taught units and project work and fulfil the educational requirements you need to become a Chartered Engineer.

Course structure

This course lasts 5 years. It starts in September 2018 and ends in 2023. Induction week starts on 24 September 2018.

Units

As part of your course, you will take compulsory units covering key concepts. You may also be able to take optional units which assist you in developing your own interests.

You need to take 60 credits in each year of your course (usually split equally into 30 credits for each semester), so the number of optional units you can take depends on the number of compulsory units in each year of the course.

Six credits are the equivalent of at least 120 hours of study, including contact time with staff and independent study.

Placement

Going on placement in your third year gives you the chance to experience working in an industrial or commercial environment. You’ll develop professional skills that will benefit the rest of your degree and improve your career prospects. Your placement will count towards becoming a Chartered Engineer, giving you an advantage that not all graduates will have. Our students have worked at companies such as Airbus, Rolls Royce and Red Bull Technology.

You are free to move between full-time and placement option courses up until the end of your second year. Placement opportunities may not be guaranteed.

Contact time with staff

In your first year, you should expect to spend 28% of your time in a lecture, seminar or practical/lab setting and 72% of the time in independent study, including reading, preparation, coursework and revision. Your unit option choices will determine your future contact hours.

Entry requirements

Your application, especially your personal statement, should explain your motivation for choosing this degree and any relevant non-academic interests and achievements. Your application is more likely to be successful if you demonstrate a strong interest in aerospace engineering through relevant reading, extracurricular or co-curricular activities, or work experience. We also favour applicants who show an ability to write and reflect analytically and thoughtfully.

Your previous academic study is also important. For example, if you have taken GCSEs then we prefer applicants with a strong set of GCSEs (such as grade A*, 8 or 9 in at least five GCSEs or grade A or 7 in the majority of your GCSEs). We also prefer applicants with strong Mathematics and Physics GCSE grades. This is in addition to our essential GCSE requirements.

You will need a strong performance in both Mathematics and Physics or Engineering as part of your entry qualifications. If you are taking qualifications including a mixture of subjects (such as A levels) we prefer either a relevant subject (such as Further Mathematics or Design and Technology) or a traditional subject (such as History).

If you are taking A levels, we may be unable to consider an A level in your own language (unless it is English or Welsh). We do not accept A levels in General Studies. If you are taking a GCE A level in a science subject, you will need to pass any separate science practical endorsement.

Typical offer A level

A*AA

A*AA including Mathematics and Physics with A* in Mathematics or Physics (or Further Mathematics if applicable).

Desirable A level subjects

Preference for applicants with their third A Level in a relevant subject (such as Further Mathematics or Design and Technology) or a traditional subject (such as History).

A level subjects that will not be considered in your application

A level General Studies will not be considered. We may be unable to consider an A level in your own language (unless it is English or Welsh).

Alternative offer A level

AAA

AAA including Mathematics and Physics plus one of:

  • grade A in an EPQ
  • grade B in the Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate
  • grade M1 in Cambridge Pre-U Global Perspectives

Students presenting with one of the above project qualifications should receive both the typical offer and the alternative.

Typical offers for other qualifications

International Baccalaureate

36 points overall and 7, 6, 6 in three Higher Level subjects including Mathematics and Physics.

Access to HE Diploma

Typical offer:
Pass the Access to HE Diploma (in Science or Engineering), with at least 39 credits achieved at Distinction. This must include 12 credits from Mathematics units (including Calculus) achieved at Distinction and 12 credits from Physics units achieved at Distinction.

Our Mechanical Engineering courses are academically challenging and require solid foundations of knowledge in Mathematics and Physics. We are able to consider Access to HE Diplomas in Science or Engineering, and we are looking for you to be studying a suitable level of Mathematics and Physics to be able to succeed in our courses. You will need to have studied Mathematics units worth at least 12 credits (including Calculus) and Physics units worth at least 12 credits. However, due to the time-limited nature of Access programme delivery, it is expected that you will have also completed a significant level of independent study in order to further develop and refine these skills.

BTEC

Typical offer:
Obtain D* D* D* in the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (QCF) plus grade A* in A level Mathematics.

We are able to consider BTEC Level 3 Extended Diplomas (QCF) in Engineering (excluding Vehicle Repair and Technology), Applied Science and Construction in combination with A level Mathematics.

Cambridge Pre-U

Typical offer:
D2, D3, D3 including D3 in Mathematics and Physics and D2 in Mathematics or Physics.

Alternative offer:
D3, D3, D3 including Mathematics and Physics plus one of the following:

HNC/HND

Our Mechanical Engineering courses are academically challenging and require solid foundations of knowledge in Mathematics and Physics. We are able to consider HNC/HND qualifications in Engineering disciplines for entry into the first year of our course. You will need to gain an overall grade of Distinction, including a Distinction in at least 20 credits of Level 4 Mathematics. In addition, you will need an A level in Mathematics at grade A or a pass rate of at least 75% for the Open University module MST124: Essential Mathematics 1.

Please note that HNC and HND qualifications may be counted as degree-level study by the Student Loans Company and therefore may be counted as previous study and have an impact on your ability to access student loans/grants for the entirety of your chosen degree. We recommend that you discuss this in detail with the SLC before following this progression route to the University of Bath.

Open University Credits

Typically, we would be looking for you to have studied units worth at least 120 credits, including at least 30 credits at Level 2 in Mathematics. We would ideally be looking for you to be taking units including:

  • S207: The Physical World or S217: Physics: From Classical to Quantum
  • MST124: Essential Mathematics 1 and MST224: Mathematical Methods

This information is a guide and all students applying with Open University Credits will be considered on a case-by-case basis. We will consider your application carefully and take note of any previous qualifications or relevant work experience. We may be able to consider alternative units to those listed. Typical offer:
Pass units worth 120 credits, including S207: The Physical World or S217: Physics: From Classical to Quantum and a Distinction/Pass 1 (85%) in a relevant Level 2 Mathematics unit worth at least 30 credits.

Please note that taking OU credits may be counted as degree-level study by the Student Loans Company and therefore may be counted as previous study and have an impact on your ability to access student loans/grants for the entirety of your chosen degree. We recommend that you discuss this in detail with the SLC before following this progression route to the University of Bath.

Scottish Highers

AA in Advanced Highers including Mathematics and Physics plus AAAAA in Scottish Highers.

Combinations of qualifications

Your application will be considered individually based on the particular combination of qualifications and subjects that you are taking.

We can consider combinations of accepted qualifications, such as A levels and a BTEC.

  • A*A in A level Mathematics and Physics plus grade D in the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma (QCF)/National Extended Certificate (RQF) OR the Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma (QCF)/Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate (RQF).
  • A*A in A level Mathematics and Physics plus D3 in a Pre-U Principal Subject.
  • A*A in A level Mathematics and Physics plus 6 in an IB HL Certificate. While we do not consider the IB Careers Programme for entry, we are able to consider the combinations of components that are typically offered by this route, such as BTEC and IB HL Certificate combinations.
  • A*A in A level Mathematics and Physics plus A in the IFS Diploma in Financial Studies.

We can also consider combinations that are not listed and that do not include A levels. You should read the information about essential and preferred subjects and subject combinations. We cannot consider different qualifications if they are in the same subject area.

£45 payable at the start of your course.

Budgeting

You will need to budget at least £100 for the cost of photocopying, printing and binding. You will also need to budget for the cost of text books.

Some courses involve visits away from campus and you may be required to pay some or all of the costs of travel, accommodation and food and drink.
