Solution Generator: A new CPD module to help professionals develop problem solving skills

Tue Nov 23 09:41:00 GMT 2010

The University is introducing a new CPD course to develop problem solving and creative thinking skills. These skills are particularly useful for those working in extreme physical and social environments (e.g. medical and military personnel) but the underlying techniques can be applied to any situation and to areas such as invention and scientific discovery.

The project has the support of the European Space Agency (ESA) who are interested in using a specially adapted version of the course for their staff working in the aerospace industry.

Collage pictureCalled the ‘Solution Generator’, the course will be available in Autumn 2011. It will be delivered via distance learning, making it accessible to professionals based overseas as well as those with little time to attend taught classes.

The techniques used in the course are based on TRIZ (a Russian acronym for the theory of inventive problem solving), a powerful problem solving method.  DVD-based films will guide users through the problem solving process and help them to develop the techniques to identify solutions to real-life problems and to cope with accelerating changes in technology and business. The course will also be supported by Moodle-based training exercises, discussion forums and online tutorials.

Learners will be able to take the unit on a non-accredited basis, or can work towards gaining 6 credits at Masters level by completing an assignment or work-based industrial case study.  The unit will be included in the University’s CPD portfolio, but can be also available for inclusion in other University programmes.
