New CPD course will help health professionals improve patients' lives
A new course offered by the Department for Health will equip healthcare professionals with the
skills to help their patients lead healthier lives.
Aimed at those who work face to face with patients including GPs, physiotherapists,
pharmacists and practice nurses, the course will teach attendees how to use Motivational
Interviewing techniques to encourage and support behaviour change.
Motivational Interviewing is a goal-orientated counselling approach which is designed to help
people resolve internal conflict or ambivalence and to make positive changes in their lives. It
uses non-confrontational and non-judgemental methods, so that change is brought about by the
patient rather than being imposed by the counsellor.
“Motivational Interviewing is a powerful tool to enhance communication with patients and
enable them to make choices to improve their health” noted course coordinator Dr Afroditi Stathi. “
This interactive and practical course will allow attendees to learn techniques that they can then
apply in the workplace”.
The 2-day course, which will run on 18 and 19 June, costs £400 and can contribute to health
professionals’ CPD requirements.
