CPD course guides freelance interpreters to career success
Karen Hewitt, Student
The "Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpretation" CPD course was successfully delivered in December 2011 at the University. Using the state-of-the-art interpretation laboratories, this CPD course has given a boost to the participants' interpretation skills. It has therefore reached its goal to effectively prepare the students for the competitive United Nations' freelance interpretation exams. The participants to this one-week, six-hour-a-day intensive training course gained hands-on experience in on-sight translation, consecutive interpretation as well as many hours of booth practice.
The feedback received from the students was very positive and underlines the quality of the course. "The teachers, their flexibility and their backgrounds are an added value. The feedback given after the exercises was always constructive". Deirdre Durrance, Director of studies for Postgraduate Interpreting and Translation said: "It is very rewarding to be able to pinpoint the strengths and weaknesses of each student and see them progress so quickly in just a few days".
The success of this short CPD course encouraged both the CPD Office and the Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies to announce four similar sessions to be held over the next year: two in June, another in September and a fourth one in early January 2013. The session to be held in June will focus on the EU interpreting examinations with special emphasis on consecutive interpretation, in addition to on-sight translation and simultaneous interpretation, from French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian.
The CPD Office offers support for CPD activity including marketing, costing, financial arrangements, and practical aspects of course delivery for those interested in developing courses for external professionals or employers.
