Fast Solution of Free Surface Flow Problems using Multigrid Iterations on Hierarchical Cartesian Grids
The aim of this project is to obtain a fast solution technique for simulation of free surface waves. A mixed Lagrangian-Eulerian approach is taken in which the free surface is tracked using a series of marker particles through which the free surface boundary conditions are implemented. The fluid domain is discretised with Hierarchical Cartesian grids, called quadtrees, containing varying level of refinement that offers high accuracy without a heavy price in computational cost. The quadtree grids are ideally suited to a multigrid strategy and using multigrid iterations the solution time for solving Laplace’s equation may be reduced by approximately 90%.
