Geotechnical, foundation & pavement engineering

Overview
Geotechnical, foundation and pavement engineering research at the University of Bath is focused in a number of areas:
  • Stability of reinforced and unreinforced slopes and earth retaining structures
  • Behaviour of unsaturated soils in geotechnical and pavement applications
  • Static and dynamic testing of soils
  • Soil elasticity and plasticity
  • Characteristics of compacted soils
  • Use of personal computers in geotechnical engineering design.

Laboratory testing is undertaken in recently upgraded laboratory facilities which include high-speed data acquisition systems, on-sample instrumentation and digitally controlled load frames. The strong-wall and strong-floor system and electronically controlled hydraulic actuators in the structural engineering laboratory are available for testing of scale models and large (up to 300mm diameter) triaxial samples.
