Born and educated in Rome, Italy, Dr D'Ayala obtained a first degree and a Doctorate degree in Structural Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering, Universita' di Roma La Sapienza. She joined the Department in March 1996, after having spent two years in Cambridge as a research associate to the Martin Centre, Faculty of Architecture and History of Art. Her main research interests are historic buildings and their structural performance, especially in earthquake prone areas, and structural behaviour related to form of three-dimensional structures such as masonry domes and vaults. These are analysed by use of non linear finite element procedures and discrete element procedures developed by herself. Her major area of interest at present is the upgrading and strengthening of existing buildings in earthquake areas and the quantification and reduction of seismic risk. She lectures in finite element analysis, analysis and design of structures using plasticity theory, earthquake engineering, conservation of historic structures, concepts of structural analysis and design for architects.
