Tim Ibell is Director of the Centre for Structural and Architectural Engineering. He graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering in 1988. After completing a PhD in prestressed concrete structures at the University in Cambridge in 1992, he acted as a civil engineering consultant until 1994 when he returned to Cambridge for three years as a post-doctoral fellow. In 1997, he joined the University of Bath as a lecturer in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. He has a strong research interest in the structural behaviour of concrete bridges and structures. In particular, Tim has developed a 3-D plasticity-based shear collapse analysis tool for the assessment of existing concrete bridges, and has a team of researchers looking at the use of fibre-reinforced-plastics as internal reinforcement for concrete structures. His main teaching interests are structural theory for first years, structural concrete design, bridge engineering and plasticity theory. He is involved in many student studio-based projects, including the first-year structures project, final-year Basil Spence project and the final Civil Engineering individual project.
