Centre
for Structural and Architectural Engineering |
Welcome to CSAEThe principle activities of the Centre for Structural and Architectural Engineering (CSAE) follow two complementary paths in Architectural and Structural design research and practice: the development of modern Lightweight Structures and innovative structural systems, and Conservation of Historic buildings and appraisal/repair of existing structures. Research and industrial services in these areas are covered by the two larger groups in the Centre. Two additional groups are concerned with the areas of Environmental Modelling - (thermal, lighting, acoustic and wind environmental modelling) and Geotechnics - (soil/structure interaction and earthquake modelling; particularly in relation to conservation problems).
There are strong links between all of the four groups in the Centre and also with the other Centres
(CASA and CWCT) in the department. The emphasis in CSAE is on integrated design research and performance
appraisal of structures, accounting for structural and material efficiency together with the influence of
environmental aspects on architectural form. |
