Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies

Second Global Innovation Initiative (GII) Workshop

second-gii-workshopTransAtlantic Discovery, Characterization and Application of Enzymes for the Recycling of Polymers and Composites

Thursday 9 July - Friday 10 July 2015

Time: 09:00
Location: 1S 0.01, University of Bath (maps)

Worldwide polymer production was approximately in 260 million tonnes in 2011 with strong growth year on year and, currently, ca 4% of processed petrochemical feedstocks are converted into polymers. An alternative to simply burning, or landfilling these polymers at this end-of-life point, is depolymerization followed by recovery of monomers for remanufacturing.

The partners in this project, the University of Bath, University of Sao Paulo (USP) and the Ohio State University (OSU) are working together to address this important global challenge, bringing complementary expertise in molecular and structural biology, polymer and materials chemistry, biodegradation and sustainable technologies to bear on the issues of biodegradation of polymers.

Workshop Aims: This is the 2nd workshop in this project bringing together partners from the UK, USA and Brazil. Our aims are to share recent research results, organise student (and staff) visits and discuss future research directions for both for the remaining year of the project. A key milestone will be the submission of collaborative grant applications for continuing and developing the research.

Workshop Program:

Day 1 (9 July) is open to all and includes a series of research talks and opportunities for discussion. There will be an ideas board for future work, including student travel.

Day 2 (10 July) is for the original project team and:

  • those interested in developing specific collaborative work within the framework, or
  • outlining joint grant applications.

In addition, there will be a specific opportunity for PhD students to pitch ideas for work to be conducted at one of the partner sites. See detailed programme.
