New Whorrod Research Fellow: Dr Ulrich Hintermair

We are pleased to announce the appointment of a new Whorrod Research Fellow, Dr Ulrich Hintermair, who joined us on Monday 3 June 2013. The position is funded by an endowment from businessman and University of Bath graduate Roger Whorrod.

Uli received a dual education as Chemist and Chemical Engineer from the University of Würzburg and the École Supérieure de Chimie, Physique et Électronique de Lyon through a binational double-diploma curriculum.

After finishing with a master thesis in organometallic chemistry with Prof. David Cole-Hamilton at the University of St Andrews in 2007, he returned to Germany for his PhD with Prof. Walter Leitner at the RWTH Aachen on continuous-flow catalysis using supercritical fluids.

He graduated summa cum laude and won the Silver Medal of the European Young Chemist Awards in 2010. As a Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow he then worked on water- and CH-oxidation catalysis with Prof. Bob Crabtree at Yale University before joining the CSCT.

Uli specializes in homogeneous catalysis research at the interface of chemistry and engineering. His work aims at developing more sustainable processes for bulk and commodities production and alternative energy conversion schemes through a concerted approach that comprises molecular catalyst design, mechanistic and kinetic investigations, as well as phase and reactor engineering.
