Success in national science communication competition
Our student, Rhodri Jenkins, has been voted winner of the
Energy Zone in this year's "I'm a Scientist,
Get Me Out Of Here" competition by school students across the country.
I'm a Scientist, Get Me Out Of Here is a national event to promote science to the next generation, modelled after popular TV shows like X-Factor. For ten days, Rhod competed with scientists from across the country to answer questions posed by British school students and avoid eviction from the competition, and last Thursday, survived to make it through to Friday's live final.
The competition, which has been running since its pilot event in 2008, was based on I'm a Councillor, Get me Out of Here. It now runs twice a year, in March and June, with support from the Royal Society.
Regarding his win, Rhod said "I am thrilled to have won my zone for I'm a Scientist, Get me Out of Here. I really enjoyed answering the questions as well as getting into some lively debates! Hopefully I've encouraged some of the students to pursue the sciences!"
Professor Matthew Davidson, Head of the Department of Chemistry and Director of the CSCT, said "Public engagement is central to the training our students receive in the Doctoral Training Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies. It helps them understand the impact their work has in society and provides them with important skills for the future."
Also joining the winners for June 2013 is Jess Bean, a PhD student in the Department of Chemistry.
