ARTIS and the University of Bath join forces to develop bio-based additives for sustainable rubber

Although natural rubber itself is a bio-based polymer many of the components in rubber products such as tyres are derived from fossil resources. CSCT and ARTIS have now joined forces to develop new sustainable additives for rubber products using renewable feedstocks such as agricultural and industrial wastes. read more »

A new open-source materials-screening Python package, developed within the Walsh Materials Design (WMD) group over the last 3 years, can now be used to discovered new materials with specific functionality. The package is called SMACT (Semiconducting Materials by Analogy and Chemical Theory) and has been specifically written so that the screening procedures can be run on a desktop computer or laptop, without the need of expensive, high performance supercomputers. read more »

Nanomaterials have the potential to play a central role in solving many of today’s biggest sustainability issues, whether it’s developing more efficient renewable energy technologies, removing pollutants from the air and water, or even in the treatment of diseases. Key to the success of nanomaterials in these areas is the development of scalable production methods that can precisely control the properties of these materials. CSCT student, David Miles has published a paper that demonstrates the rapid and scalable production of ZnO nanomaterials using a technique called electrochemical anodization. read more »

Water is a scarce and precious resource, especially so for developing countries. As well as sourcing water in these regions, supplies must also be tested for a variety of toxic compounds. Currently the methods to do this are costly, time consuming and complex. The use of plastics has exploded over the last century due to the material’s low cost and versatility. A recent publication from Dr Matthew Jones’ group seeks to expand upon previous work. As well as showing the diverse amount of research yet to be carried out in the Poly (Lactic Acid) field, there are also some surprises; by simply changing the metal used in the method (hafnium to aluminium) there is a complete reversal of selectivity. read more »
